This week, Pam Sherman, 55, our Master Trainer here at b-untethered chats with us about staying strong into our later years. She has been a certified instructor and coach for over 25 years where she has helped thousands discover the right balance of movement, mindful eating, and motivation. We are so thrilled to have her on the team to help our ladies become the best version of themselves.
You have devoted your life to Fitness. What are you most proud of?
I’m the most of proud of my ability to do pull-ups! When Terminator 2 came out, it was awesome to see a strong female. They were no where else. In the gym, most women did cardio, cardio and more cardio. I had pull-ups on many vision boards but never worked on them. When I was 46, I had one put in my backyard. It took me 6 months of practice before I got to 1. That hard work and determination finally paid off!
You were hit by a car and that changed your life. Tell us how it changed you.
It forced me to take another path. Prior to that I had spent 20 years teaching classes and training women. I had to stop all of that due to many oral surgeries. The only thing I could do was write, and ended up writing 3 books in a few months.
Another was finding a coach as I wasn’t sure what I really wanted to do with my career. I started doing public speaking. She invited me to go to the Best You in London in 2019! It was incredible.
It also made me know the Universe had bigger plans for me to reach more women with my message of Your Health is Your Wealth! Instead of dieting down and having skinny be the goal, let’s be strong and age well and feel great in the next 10, 20 or 40 years down the road.
In the last 4 years, I’ve started reaching out to fitness companies on social media when I see they have no coaches or trainers over 50. Our age group is vastly under-represented, women over a certain age relate more to me as a coach than a 30-something. I will introduce myself asking to collaborate and coach for them to motivate the over 50 crowds on their fitness journey! I want to inspire women over 40 on their health journey! So far I’ve gotten FitRadio(an app), Terra-Core fitness, Helix at home, and Maxpro on board!
Do you ever have days you don’t want to exercise? How do you stay motivated?
Rarely. I go to bed thinking about my workout in the morning! But… when those days happen, I ask myself what is the bare minimum I can do to feel good. Recently it was running a mile. Then I had the endorphins kick in and did a bit more. Something is always better than nothing!
What helps you get through tough times?
Running. I grew up in an emotionally abusive household and running saved my life. My brothers turned to alcohol while I went out to hit the streets. It never changed the situation, but it did change how I felt on the inside. Getting out and moving my body has always been my therapy.
What is your go-to food for “fueling”?
Protein and fiber. I usually have one BAS(big ass salad) a day and have protein with every meal. This is the winning combination to keep me full and my muscles fueled!
What about food temptations? What’s your favorite treat?
My favorite drink after my workout is KOS salted caramel protein powder mixed with hot water and 1 tbsp of dark baking cocoa. Mix in the blender and OMG it is sooooo good!
As I’ve gotten older and eat really clean, my body doesn’t process sugar or packaged foods very well. I’ll have a bit at the holidays, but I love how I eat on the daily! And really enjoy the protein hot cocoa everyday!
If someone were to play you in a movie, who would that be?
Elizabeth Shue. I’ve had more than a few people tell me we look alike!
Favorite book?
